Pirates Out of Nedbank Cup in Shock Loss

Orlando Pirates’ dreams of a fourth consecutive Nedbank Cup final were shattered on Saturday, 21 February.

The Buccaneers were dumped out of the competition by second-tier Casric Stars at a stunned Orlando Stadium, Johannesburg, losing 5-4 on penalties after the match ended goalless following 120 minutes of play.

The defeat completed a disastrous week for Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side, following their midweek loss to Mamelodi Sundowns that ended a 14-game unbeaten streak.

Despite dominating possession, Pirates struggled to break down a resilient Stars defense. The heartbreak was sealed in the shootout when captain Nkosinathi Sibisi missed the opening penalty, and Nkosikhona Ndaba later failed to convert, allowing Zebulon Mtshweni to fire the underdogs into the quarter-finals.

Reflecting on the upset, a frustrated Ouaddou said: “It’s a very disappointing result… In cup football, any team can challenge you over one game with team spirit. We worked on penalties during the week… but it wasn’t meant to be.”

With the tournament favourites now out, the field is wide open for a new champion. Pirates must quickly regroup as they prepare for a high-stakes Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs this coming Saturday, 18 February.
